System Uses
Skyscrapers
Diagrid systems are efficient in these types of structures due to their high strength capabilities with an overall light frame. This allows for flexibility during the design process. For example, many shape types are possible, so complex designs are easily attainable this way. Also, diagrids allow for internal columns to be eliminated entirely, thus creating more internal space for the builder to utilize in their designs.
In some buildings, the diagrid system is used as an exoskeleton, or “second skin” for the building. Depending on the design type, this second skin can be dependent and independent of the internal building portion. This skin can also be used for lighting, airflow, and provide extra strength support and protection for the internal building.
Bridges
A diagrid as a bridge system is a fully functional concept in today’s industry. By utilizing a diagrid for a bridge system, it allows for spans of great length to be constructed without requiring intermediate supports. Used in this way, the ability for the structural members to be rotated ninety degrees to the horizontal is possible.
Most commonly used in foot bridges, this design is otherwise not widely used as of yet. As design materials become more engineered and further research is done, this design idea holds great potential for the future.
Sculptures
Sculptural installations are common, practical examples of diagrid systems. While on a different scale than those of diagrid buildings, they serve a similar purpose. They provide a pleasing aesthetic to the eye as well as remain strong despite their light frames. Due to the components of the diagrid sculpture being spacious and open, wind loads do not play as much of a factor on the structural integrity of the sculpture, especially is it is an outdoor installation.
Foundations
Figure SU1: Foundation Diagram
As seen in Figure SU1, for a diagrid system a unique system of foundations is necessary in order for the weight distribution of the building system to be structurally sound. They typical foundation for a diagrid is a pile foundation driven deep into the ground. A foundation is located at each point on the ground where two sloped columns meet at the grade level of the builiding.
